Last time, we talked about getting Ubuntu/Mint Linux installed, deciding whether to use existing hardware, or to buy a box with your new OS pre-installed. Most important, I told you how to take control of your sound card again when using a USB headset with your PC’s sound card.

Before we get too deep into this, you need to make sure that you have two very important things: a non-daily use machine and that it has a bootable CD Drive. I went back and forth about the whole bootable CD thing and I finally came to one very important conclusion - if you are running a PC that does not have a bootable CD drive, then you have bigger problems than switching to a new OS. That said, here is an “option” for you that will have most of you breaking down to simply buying a machine that is ready to go.

Some interesting observations here about dual booting between windows and linux. I’ve been using standby mode in xp for a while now, suspending to memory instead of disc (but using s3 power save, meaning the machine completely switches off while hibernating).. this guy hibernates both OS’s, and using grub, is able to fast switch (well, ok, not fast;) between the hibernated OS’s….
The other day I found myself staring out the window next to my desk. It was around 6.30 in the evening, and the lights had just gone on over Hyde Park.
The whole scene was one of winter serenity, aided considerably by the window sill, which prevented me from being exposed to the chaos that is Elizabeth St, Sydney, at peak hour.

Found this handy tutorial for recovering damaged (windows) installations/partitions using a Linux boot cd.
Few moments in computing are as heartbreaking as when you turn on your trusty PC only to receive that bone-chilling message: “Boot sector corrupt. Config.sys missing. Disk cannot be read.“
In other words, “You’re screwed.“
Or are you? Just because your computer can’t boot up Windows from
your hard drive doesn’t mean you can’t boot it up with another
operating system on another disk just long enough to rescue your
important files. Today we’ll use the completely free Knoppix Linux Live disk to safely move your files on a failing hard drive to a healthy USB drive - no Windows required.
Note:
There are lots of bootable CDs and DVDs that you can use to get your
computer running long enough to grab your files, like the previously-mentioned BartPE,
which requires your original Windows installation disk to build. If you
want a familiar Windows solution and you have your original
installation disks, that’s the way to go. This is for the slackers who,
ahem, lost or don’t have access to the original Windows disks, and who
aren’t afraid of a different-looking operating system.
Let’s get started turning your machine into a Linux-CD booted powerhouse.

Initng is a full replacement of the old and in many ways deprecated sysvinit tool created by Jimmy Wennlund. It is designed to significantly increase the speed of booting a unix-compatible system by starting processes asynchronously.

This is just a summary of a previous thread
on improving the way your fonts look in X11. Many people have noticed
significant improvment in font rendering with these patches. You might
wish to check out these before and after screenshots from that thread.
Other people wrote the patches; I am just condensing the various
instructions that were dispersed throughout the previous thread, with
some more detailed instructions. The algorithms in these patches may or
may not be covered by Microsoft’s ClearType patents; check with this guy
if this is a concern for you. Special thanks go to jcooper, hugmenot,
mannheim, and of course David Turner who wrote the patches to begin
with.

EasyUbuntu is an easy to use (duh!) script that gives the Ubuntu
user the most commonly requested apps, codecs, and tweaks that are not
found in the base distribution - all with a few clicks of your mouse.
EasyUbuntu is so easy to use in fact, that even your grandma could
be playing encrypted dvds, streaming Windows Media, and sporting the
latest Nvidia or Ati drivers in minutes! And yes, EasyUbuntu is GPL.
EasyUbuntu works on (X/K)ubuntu and on all the three architectures (x86, AMD64 and PPC).
Welcome to EasyUbuntu
